
Some people think about New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, or London when they think about cities. I’ve lived in global cities, but growing up in Metro Detroit gave me a passion for what urban scholars call ordinary cities. This page is dedicated to understanding how race, social class, and residential location shape lived experiences in Detroit and ordinary cities in Germany and Zambia.
There are many issues that present a challenge to sustainable urban development in Zambia. I have been investigating these issues across the country’s most urbanised region, the Copperbelt. In this piece I wrote for the UK’s Royal Town Planning Institute, I discuss some of the most significant problems to urban development in the region.
